The Coworker
Tasha Quinn answered her front door but didnât look happy to see the four investigators.
âYou were there at that wedding this afternoon,â she said, preparing to shut the door again. âIâm sorry. If you had any problems with your paperwork, youâre going to have to wait a few days to get it straightened out. Thereâs a lot going on right now.â
âWeâre aware of that,â said Detective Peters.
âAnd weâre not here because of a problem with our paperwork,â said Ryan.
âThough we do appreciate the confirmation that you were at the courthouse and able to see our group there,â said Heather. âWe thought the curly blonde-headed woman who might have worked there matched your description, but you just confirmed how late you were at the building.â
âI donât understand,â Tasha said, curling her hair around her finger.
Ryan and Detective Peters showed her their badges, and she stopped trying to close the door. They introduced themselves and the private investigators.
âSo, you were at the courthouse this afternoon?â Heather prompted.
âThatâs right. I do work there,â said Tasha, crossing her arms. âI didnât know you were police and P.I.s. I thought you were there for a wedding.â
âWe were,â said Heather. âWhich was why it was particularly upsetting when we came across a clerkâs dead body.â
âDid you know that Oswald Walker was murdered?â asked Ryan.
âMy boss told us not to come back in after lunch because the police were looking into Oswaldâs death,â said Tasha.
âAnd why were you late going to lunch?â Amy asked bluntly.
âBecauseâ¦â Tasha looked down at the ground. âWell, I suppose you better come inside.â
She opened the door and led the way to her living room. A tabby cat looked up at them as they approached and made room on the couch as they all took seats. The cat decided that he particularly liked Detective Peters and kept rubbing against the officerâs legs. Peters tried not to laugh at the tickling sensation as he wrote down potential clues in his notebook.
âHow much do you know about Oswald Walker?â asked Tasha.
âReally just that he was strangled to death after my friendâs wedding,â said Amy.
âOur friend thought he was a nice man,â said Heather. âHe was accommodating with her wedding so she could have the time that she wanted.â
âShe didnât know the real Oswald,â said Tasha. âAnd itâs probably a good thing too. If he was acting nice, he was probably getting close to ruining her life.â
âWhat do you mean?â asked Amy.
Tasha sighed. âI donât know how much you already know. Are you trying to trick me?â
âMs. Quinn,â said Heather. âWeâre trying to catch a killer. Thatâs all weâre after. And if you can help us, weâd appreciate it.â
The cat meowed, and Peters pet his head. âHe seems to be a very friendly cat.â
âHeâs the thing I love most in this world,â Tasha said.
Hoping it would encourage her to talk, Heather began talking about her own pets. âI have a dog and a cat. My dog is obsessed with donuts and Cupcake, the kitten, basically thinks sheâs a dog.
